The Onion, "America's Finest News Source," once reported New Starbucks Opens In Rest Room Of Existing Starbucks. Well, in the North East of England, our equivalent of Seattle's finest is Greggs the Bakers, as illustrated by this photograph of South Shields High Street:

Not as good as yours, but the road behind Waterloo Station is Lower Marsh (which has shops and a market) and 87 Lower Marsh is a Greggs, as is 109, and yes, they really are about two minutes walk from each other. The smaller one mainly sells sandwiches and some cakes and drinks, the larger one has a wider range.

Clearly the Clever Marketing Types at Greggs have worked out that having shops close to each other doesn't hit sales as much as you'd logically expect it to. I wonder why?

Obviously, the left Gregg's is better than the right one, and I won't have you telling me that it's any other way. ;)
